Animal Helpline
We always have lots of different dogs. Different sizes, shapes, ages, some pedigree, some who knows!
All have different personalities, temperaments and needs. Some may need an extra-special new home, others may need owners with experience of their particular breed, and some may not be suitable to share a new home with small children.
Some dogs do not like other dog companions. A common question is if the dog will be ok with cats.
Please also consider if your cat will be ok with a dog. We don't want to rehome one animal to cause another animal suffering or cause another rehoming problem.
We do our very best to match the right owner with the right dog on an individual basis.

Rarely do you find a 100% perfect dog some dogs are fine, but some have the following
problems:-
Not housetrained
Terrified of anything and everything
Food aggression
No lead training or road sense
Destructive chewing
With a lot of patience and perseverance these and most other problems you encounter can be overcome. Don’t give up at the first hurdle seek advice and help. We will offer on-going support when you adopt one of our dogs. Don’t be frightened to ask for assistance you are showing you are a responsible pet owner who wants the best for their dog. We will take any of our dogs back if a rehoming does not work out. Please do be aware however that donations for the kennels are non refundable except in extreme circumstances.

So how do I get a rescue dog?

phone interview

If you see a dog on this website you would like to give a home to please call 07849 637862 or 01780783331. The kennel staff are always really busy, and Ros also works as a mobile groomer so its not always possible to get an answer straight away.
Please do leave a message and someone will deffinatley call you back.
We will just ask you some simple questions to find out what sort of dog your are looking for, about yourselves, where you live etc.

Meet the dog

You are welcome to come to the kennels. Please make an appointment. This is very important to make sure someone is availiable to show you round.
People come to the kennels for 2 reasons. One that they have seen a dog on th internet they would like to meet or some people want to just see the dogs and choose one they fall in love with. Either way this is fine. We will make sure the dog fits your life style.
Please bring all members of the family with you to meet the dog including children. If you have another dog please also bring them. This meeting is also to see if the dog likes you as much as, if you like the dog.

Home check

Once you have chosen your new furry friend we will arrange a home check. This is nothing to worry about. We are not interested in your decor and if you have hoovered this morning. We are only interested in the dogs welfare and that you have a suitable home.
i.e. a fenced in garden and that your home meets the dogs needs. For example a home check will fail if you want a St Bernard and live in a bedsit!
If you have quite a distance to travel, have spoken in depth to the rehoming people about a particular dog; we can arrange a home check before you come to Peterborough so you can take the dog back with you. We have home checkers all over the country so this usually is feesable.

Taking the dog home

Once your home check has been sucsessful you can collect your dog.
Please have in place all the items you need to bring a new dog home. Water and food bowls, lead, collar, toys, food, bed etc.
We ask for a minimum donation of £75. Please bare in mind we rely on these donations to help other dogs. A puppy will cost several hundreds from a breeder so if you can afford me please consider this.
If the adoption fee is a problem, please consider if you can afford a dog at all.
Adoption fees are non refundable even in the case of a dog being returned, unless extreme circumstances (for example the original owner is found and you are happy to hand the dog back)
In most instances the dog will have been nuetered. If there are circumstances that prevent the dog being neutred we will ask you to sign adoption papers insisting this is done. This is very much a term of the adoption and we will check.

Follow up

We do a follow up home check in a few months time just to make sure everyone is happy. If you have any problems please just call. Do bare in mind a home enviroment might be very over whelming for a little while to the dog. Children should not be allowed to smother him. Please don't bring a dog back because he has done a wee on the kitchen floor or chewed something he shouldn't have, if these sort of instances are intorable to you, then dog ownership really is not for you.

Lily | Staffordshire Bull Terrrier
Lily is a 12 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Lily has not had a good life and when she came into our care her nails were curling under and we believe she had been shut away and used for breeding, not being exercised and not being given the care she needed. Lily has also recently sadly been let down when a forever home had to pull out due to a change of heart and again Lily finds herself waiting for a loving home when at her age time is so precious. On occasions she looks very sad like she has all the troubles of the world on her shoulders and it would be such a wonderful thing for Lily to finally find a loving home where she can live out her remaining years in the secure knowledge she will be cared for and given all the things a dog needs.
Lily is currently in a foster home and has settled well, like she has always been there, she has been a very easy girl to have around and would suit people with no previous experience of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, she loves people and her favourite place is the lap, she follows her foster parents around wagging her tail just wanting to be near them, on a recent visit to the vets she enjoyed the attention given her, she has a couple of skin walts which our vet has advised are only cosmetically unsightly and no health risk and for the sake of being picture perfect it is not worth the risk to Lily to anesthetize her to remove them, she is looking for someone who will love her walts and all. She also suffered a break or fracture when much younger which was not treated correctly and has left her with a wonky slightly sticky out leg but for all her lumps and wonkiness we think she is beautiful, so she is looking for someone who can look beyond her not so perfect looks and see the graceful beauty inside, she is gentle and quite and has a wonderful nature, she greets all people well and just wants to be friends.
Lily is also currently living with other dogs big and small and is very good with them all, she has no malice in her at all and greets other dogs well with no issues, although she is not interested in playing she will snuggle up to another dog when sleeping, she enjoys her walks although cannot do long hikes and a gentle stroll around the block is all she needs, a garden to potter around in and to have a sunbathe in is also essential. Her recall is not 100% and her hearing is not as good as it would have been in her younger days, but on her walks she never ventures far from your side just occasionally stopping for a sniff here and there.
Lily loves water and is a good swimmer, she also enjoys a game with the hose pipe although this is only advisable on a hot day as both human and dog end up rather wet!
She is a good traveller and sits watching the world go by or curls up for a snooze on longer journeys, she is easy on the lead, toilet trained and enjoys her food and treats.
Lily likes the slower quieter pace of life, a busy home with small children would not be for Lily, she is looking for a quieter home and although she is good with children we would prefer her to live with older children only, she would be happy to live with other dogs or as a only dog, Lily has been let down so much in her life that she deserves a forever loving home finally where she will not be required to do anything except be loved.
For more info or if you can offer Lily a home please contact her foster mum direct at animalhelpline@hotmail.co.uk or 01775710876

Sadie | Collie Cross
Sadie is a 8 to 10 year old female long coated Collie cross. This beautiful girl has been looking for a new home for some time and we think it is high time she found that forever loving home. Sadie had to have a growth removed from her ear which has left her with one ear up and one wonky ear only at half mast, we don't think this detracts from how pretty she is though. Sadie is currently in a foster home with other dogs big and small who she gets on well with she is respectful of their space and waits her turn, despite her age she still enjoys a game and running around and likes to have a game with another dog, Sadie enjoys her walks and this girl if human would be a olympic swimmer, she adores water and at any opportunity will dive in, on her walks along the local river bank she will spend more time in the water than on land.  She has settled well in her foster home and has proved a easy girl to have around, she is a quiet gentle girl who enjoys a fuss and does a little dance with her back legs when her lower back is tickled. Sadie is good with people and greets people well, she could live with older children but a home with young children would be to over whelming for her, as she likes the quieter gentler pace of life and not being the centre of attention, she did not like her photo being taken and would turn her head away and look the other way.
Sadies other passion in life other than water is food, she does have one bad habit where food is concerned, she jumps up the kitchen surface and tries to eat her dinner from its bowl before she has been given it she is learning though that this is not acceptable , she is a quick learner though and very easily trained.
Sadie enjoys her walks, she walks better on a body harness she will pull at first but after her initial excitement calms down and is gentler to walk. She is toilet trained and travels well, she is happy to be left.
Sadie has a beautiful coat which will need regular grooming she is looking for a home where she will be loved and cared for forever.
For more info or if you are able to offer Sadie a forever home please contact her foster mum on animalhelpline@hotmail.co.uk or 01775710876

Brusa (pronounced Bruiser although this boy is anything but) is such a cuddly, snugly, loving boy it is hard to believe anyone would want to give him up as he is just a heart stopper and you instantly fall in love with him. Brusa gets on well with his male kennel mate and is a submissive boy, he is interested in other dogs he meets on his walks but not in a aggressive way just inquisitive. He walks well on a lead and walks to heel and is excellent on a extendable lead, he likes his treats and is a gentle boy in taking them, he knows his basic commands and will sit and give paw (x2 if he thinks he needs to) lay down and would be very trainable. Brusa is not a excitable dog and does not jump up, he is good with children and our volunteers children walked him and groomed him and he was very gentle. He enjoys his walks and would need moderate exercise, Brusa is not boisterous but calm and gentle and happy to be touched all over he did not even mind his teeth being checked.

He is totally toilet trained and is no bother at all. Jed could be left a few hours without any problems at all. He loves a ball but would prefer you to go chase him with it. . Jed doesnt like male dogs but is fine with females. Jed is a joy to have around and is waiting patiently for his forever home. He has been overlooked quite a bit as he isnt a cute fluffy dog. but what he lacks in fluffiness he makes up for with entertainment. A home without small children is also best suited although he has been in a foster home with 2 babies he is quite bouncy around them. Teenagers are better suited for him that can throw a ball for hours .Jed is a calm boy and would love a home to call his own. Jed is neutered, wormed and had flea treatment

Anna | GSD Cross
Anna is a large and lovely German Shepherd/Akita cross lady who is about 8 years old. She is currently under the care of Animal Helpline in Peterborough. She shares her kennel with other dogs and gets on well with them though she may need careful introductions with dogs she doesn’t know, after which she is fine. Anna is a very intelligent girl who is playful and doesn’t act her age at all. Ideally, Anna would love to find new people who are experienced with large breeds such as herself. She is a big strong girl and has the most expressive, pretty face and a lovely personality. She has certainly won the heart of the lady who runs the rescue and there is no doubt that she will make a loving and loyal companion for her new owner.
Anna really enjoys being groomed and is a very good natured girl. Her only dislike is cats, so she would not be able to be rehomed with them.
You can see from her photos what a beauty she is. If you love your dogs large and lovely and have experience of Anna’s breed, then please find out more about her asap.

betty | Staffordshire Bull Terrrier

Betty is a gorgeous elderly staffy girl who came to us from the stray pounds. She is an adorable lady who currently shares her kennel with another dog. Betty really needs to be in a warm and comfy home as soon as possible. She has a cough which has been checked out by our vet who informs us that Betty's heart is fine so she may have little problem with her lungs. Betty's back legs are not that strong. However, this does not stop her from scampering around and enjoying her walks. Betty has had a couple of fits since she has been with us so we really do want her out of kennels quickly to be looked after in a home environment.

Betty is house trained and although she gets on with other dogs when out and about on her walks she definitely wants to be top dog in the home and rule the roost! So we feel Betty would perhaps be best suited as an only pet. Betty is extremely affectionate and loving, and enjoys being cuddled. She is happy to be touched all over, have her ears checked and be groomed. She is very playful, likes toys and comes when called or whistled, charging at you for a hug!

Please can you offer Betty the home she deserves? She desperately needs a forever home but if you can offer Betty a foster home in the meantime she will return your kindness a million times over.

ROSIE: Rosie is a very gentle girl. It would seem that she isn't used to affection as she didn't realise she liked fuss until she was given some and now can't get enough!

Sherlock | Staffie Cross

SHERLOCK: Sherlock is an 8 month old cross breed boy. He is full of energy and life.

Would suit a family environment although he doesn't like bikes! But if you can run around and play ball or tug for hours and hours then Sherlock will be lots of fun.

Sherlock is good with other dogs and is super friendly with people he has a super character, his been waiting a while just because his a staffie x.

Marley | Collie Cross

MARLEY -

Black and white male spaniel.

Needs experienced owner who is prepared to do some training skills with Marley. He can be a little pushy and just needs to know he's not the pack leader so he can settle down and enjoy life and not have to worry about being boss anymore.

Best homed to an all adult home.

Lottie | Rottweiler
LOTTIE: Lottie is a Rottweiler bitch. She has a very cute habit of leaving the end of her tongue sticking out when she shuts her mouth! She is very friendly and happily gives a paw if there’s a treat involved.

Bella | Rottie Cross
BELLA: Bella is a lovely (despite the worried look on her face!) 3 year old female Rottie cross. She does not appear to get on with other dogs very much but may do well if she is homed with a male dog who would not be intimidated by her. Bella is extremely ‘person friendly’ and loves lots of fuss and deserves a good home

Merlin | Scruffy cross dog
MERLIN: Merlin is a small male terrier cross, about 4 years old. He is quite a possessive little dog and his elderly previous owner did not cope very well with this. Merlin needs an environment where he will be comfy as a member of the ‘pack’ not the leader. Do you think you can give Merlin the structure he needs?

Pepper | Scruffy cross dog

PEPPER: Pepper is a young wiry haired terrier.  Unfortunately his previous owners didn’t train him well and he has developed some challenging behaviour.  He has been homed since coming to us but was, sadly, returned for biting.  He will therefore need a new owner that is willing to work with him on these issues.
